Knowledge mapping, discovery and synthesis for informed R&D&I decision making

Research, development and innovation management requires up-to-date knowledge on current science, research directions and trends, timely problems and solutions provided by the scientific community. i.e. by field experts and professionals. In knowledge-intensive sectors such as the medical and healthcare sector, or infocommunication technologies it is vital to support problem-solving, development, positioning of innovative products, services and technologies by an effective utilization of the most relevant and recent achievements of scientific research in the field.

The most genuine, comprehensive and trustworthy sources of this essential knowledge are the large-scale collections of scientific publications. However, the scale and growth rate of international publication output virtually prevents field experts and practicing developers to cope with such amounts of scientific information, in terms of either access and retrieval of the relevant knowledge base, or processing and synthesising the results. In this domain, Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center provides suitable services based on state-of-the-art research methodologies to assist the use of the most appropriate and high quality knowledge base underpinning innovation and development, including the following modules (that naturally constitute a workflow for constructing high-quality knowledge bases):

  • Knowledge Mapping (KM)
KM is a methodological toolkit based on bibliometric methods applied for large-scale publication data. As a special form of big data mining tailored towards scientific publication data, KM is capable of identifying the relevant publication record (corpus) representing a research domain, field, topic or discourse, extracting major and less salient topics, themes, research problems and results. Trends in publication data, both temporal or topical, or the professional networks and communities behind the knowledge base can also be effectively uncovered and analyzed via KM methods.
  • Knowledge Discovery (KD)
As the next level in the process of knowledge construction, KD methodology deploys text mining tools to uncover hidden or latent interrelations of topics, research subjects and entities identified in the publication record resulting from the knowledge mapping module. KD can, for example, reveal indirect causal relations or complex causal networks in chemistry, biochemistry or physiology, being a popular direction in bioinformatics. Outcomes can be directly utilized in medicine, pharmacy or pharmacology. KD has its main potential in algorithmically linking research results that are otherwise distributed in a large body of scientific literature, the mutual interrelations of which results therefore escaping the attention of the reader.
  • Knowledge Synthesis (KS)
At the top of the knowledge construction process is the knowledge synthesis methodology. Given a high-quality knowledge base, i.e. a collection of well selected publications compiled in the knowledge mapping module, KS provides professional means to filter out and synthesise the actual results of the research most relevant to the client. The two major KS research designs provided in our service are systematic reviews and meta-analyses, the point of which is to convey an objective and standardized integrative overview of available high-quality research, using protocols and statistical rigour in summarizing the results.
Data management and mining in field of nutrition, food and agriculture

The Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center in healthcare and food sector development applies a system-based, holistic approach. That’s why beside the nutritional situation analysis as well as prevention programmes we consider the possibilities of development of other activities, which could also contribute to the boost of the local economies, from promotion of rural tourism to renewable energy use. The Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center is independent from any supplier firms. Choosing and suggesting the best possible technologies our firms’ motivation is the maximal satisfaction of it’s partners.

The Hungarian nutritional, food and agricultural legislation has been always combining the best solutions from German, French and British regulatory practice. In last decades, during the accession to the European Union, we have accumulated considerable experiences in legal harmonisation. In some fields (e.g. establishment of a unified food safety system) the Hungarian solutions have served as an example for other EU-member states. These experiences could have a high importance of states, struggling for upgrading the efficiency of governments and introduce their agro-food products on the single European market. Specialists and advisors of Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center have obtained considerable experiences in nutritional, agricultural and food policy formation on governmental level.

It is the Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center’s strongly belief that the human resource development is necessary precondition of technical and technological modernisation. As a partner of numerous Hungarian vocational schools, colleges and universities, our firm promotes the establishment of bi-and multilateral international partnerships between institutes of education. These partnerships open doors for organization joint conferences, joint publications in scientific journals exchange of students and teachers, participation of foreign students in BSc and MSc, as well as doctoral programs of different universities.

The firm offers different, tailor-made solutions from organisation of practical, hands-on trainings of manual workers to professional courses for decision makers. With the assistance of the Hungarian educational institutions the Ltd is ready to provide comprehensive, two pillar cooperation programs, offering on the one hand agricultural education, and training on the other hand the modern methods of the extensive agricultural production and animal breeding on the ground with the participation of Hungarian experts. These programs, focusing on the optimization of resources of production, marketing and management should assist in the development of income-generating capacity of the agriculture and food production. Cooperation with the Pro-Sharp Research and Innovation Center Nonprofit Ltd also means the promising combination of education and on the ground utilization of the Hungarian nutrition policy formation, agricultural and food industrial experiences.

Key areas of activity if field of food and nutrition:

  • Preparation of high-level reviews, based on Prizma method.
  • Statistical data analysis and data mining, based on anthropometric and physiologic value.
  • Public health policy analysis and planning.
  • Health epidemiology, supported by geoinformatical analysis.
